Mudspike 3rd Annual DCS Fall Fly-In

It’s been a year since our last Mudspike DCS Fall Fly-In. Although we might be stretching the definition of Fall a little, we will be hosting the 3rd Annual Mudspike DCS Fall Fly-In on the weekend of December 2-3, 2017.

DCS World 1.5.X and 2.1.X servers will be running with various sandbox-style multiplayer missions. Server connection details will be posted the week before the event as well as a proposed schedule of mission events or themes.

The Friday evening before the event we will be hosting the missions early. This would be a great time to check in, check your install and ability to connect to the servers and fly with some people in a very casual environment. Saturday and Sunday will follow that same pattern but Friday is an unofficial early start.

Virtual pilots of all experience levels are welcome!

If you have been putting off playing in a multiplayer environment then this is a perfect opportunity to give it a try. Even if it is only to log in and be part of a group, many of us are more than willing to help out, offer advice or work in some training time over the course of the event. None of us are experts on all of the modules in DCS World but many of us are willing to learn and share what we might know. (BeachAV8R edit – I might be there to show you what NOT to do as I demonstrate walking around after ejecting..) We do have a few real world pilots (civilian and military) and they are often willing to share their knowledge as long as it does not cross some conflict-of-interest or classified lines. It is quite a thing to work through (or even to listen in to) a cooperative combat environment with an Air Force officer in charge or to talk aviation with a skilled, learned commercial aviation pilot.

Some Additional Information

If you would like to put up a server, host or submit a mission for hosting, please send the @staff a private message and we will work out the details. We welcome all suggestions and help!

In the event of a major patch (DCS World 2.5, the release of Razbams Harrier, etc) we will do our best to accommodate the update but we would suggest that any patches/updates that occur on the Thursday/Friday before the event may not make it to the servers/mission designers in time for testing or adaptation.

Voice communications on TeamSpeak 3 are strongly recommended. Rest assured that although we all hate the sound of our own voices, we never have a problem with the sounds of someone else. We have a policy of having an open and friendly voice communication space. Connection information can be found in the Events tab at the top of the forum page or here.

If you have any requests for a mission or module that you would like to see, let us know in the comments below and we can make sure that there are some client spots available in at least some of the missions. If you are looking to learn more about a specific system or tactic, please let us know in the comments and we will see what we can do.

We will make an effort to have at least a few examples of all of the DCS World modules available in each mission. If you have a particular preference, we can do our best to meet demand for that module.

As usual, we will put up an AAR/Stories Fly-In thread in the AAR portion of the forums for screenshots, stories or discussion during the event.

Rules of The Road

In order to ensure fun play for everyone, there are some ground rules and/or guidelines listed below. In general, if a player is disrupting everyone else’s good time, they will be kicked and/or banned. We have never had to kick or ban anyone at Mudspike, and we’d really like to keep that trend going.

  • Shoot to Kill, Play to Have Fun. It’s not just a motto, it’s…ok, well, actually it is just a motto, but it’s a pretty good one. Play hard, but play nice and be fair;
  • No team-killing. Most (if not all) missions can be assumed to be CO-OP focused or CO-OP friendly with no adversary client positions unless specified in the title/briefing. If you feel the need to go fangs out, coordinate with players ahead of time and set up a PvP mission but at the very least, you are required to have the permission of everyone involved and to move off to an unoccupied area of the map;
  • No killing of the Tanker. We all know that tanking is a pain but please don’t take that out on the tanker, even if it is ‘an accident’ or ‘they made fun of my mother’;
  • No obscene language, TS3 or text. Not all folks enjoy obscene language, even if meant in good humor. Other folks may have friends/family reading the chat messages over their shoulder or listening in on external speakers and may hear what you intended as a closed room comment;
  • PLEASE use push-to-talk. Mouth-breathers and keyboard clacking can be very distracting for others;
  • Read the chat bar. Respect those who might not be on TS3. Remember to send text messages for important comms in addition to broadcasting over TS3 as not everyone may not be on TS3 or in the same channel. Be sure to know which key is used to access chat for the DCS modules you will be flying;
  • Runway/Carrier Operations.  The standard rules used in previous fly-ins:
  1. There is an active runway in use as decided by the in-game ATC (who will at least make some effort to send you in the right direction). If there is doubt (or ATC is being quiet because someone else is taxiing), feel free to follow them to the active runway;
  2. Make an effort to announce on Teamspeak, or in chat, when you are about to take the runway or are on final and then announce when you are clear (landed and off the runway or are wheels up). Clear the runway/deck as fast as possible and then announce it (ie: “Skippy5 is clear of the active runway!”);
  3. With a carrier spot, initially select a spectators position and make sure that you are not spawning in on top of anyone (the deck is ‘clear’) and check in on Teakspeak/chat. When you do spawn in, if you are not taking off with the initial load of weapons/fuel, fold your wings and immediately taxi to a position that does not occupy the launch/landing portions of the deck (there are such spaces beside or behind the superstructure/tower);
  4. Access to the active runway is by priority order:
  • Emergency (damage or low fuel);
  • Landing;
  • Taking off:
  • Landing;

  1. Count me in!

  2. When I saw this post I blurted out Fly-in funk yea! and the date to my wife in my best “stand back woman, this is what I do” voice.

    She went in the other room muttering “Yeah maybe.”

    So all in all I think it went well and I am looking forward to it.

    Hey Beach do you think we will be Harrier-ing for it? Inquiring minds…

  3. Server…
    Hollo Pointe
    v1.5.latest missions for COOP and if Red joins some H2H.
    We will host -
    Erl Sis
    Kill Fighters
    Kill Transports

    And, of course -
    The Highway

  4. Well. I will.

  5. Tyco says:

    Just in time to have a fast moving strike airframe. Count me in!

  6. I asked for that…

  7. homealone

  8. But to answer your question - I certainly hope so. I mean, the Harrier looks great and certainly seems pretty darn complete, but I’ve literally scratched 1% of what it does (engines and flight controls). I haven’t loaded a weapon yet, tried out the NAV stuff beyond TACAN, or really explored the MFDs at all. So you definitely can’t use my opinion as the judge of completeness.

  9. Looking forward to it. Stocking up on jack daniels for the evening, strong coffee for the early morning (or when jack d. hampers my speech too much) Berocca for when i wake, new earings fr the wife to let me have mancave weekend.

    Ka-50, Mi-8, baguette, f-5, ABBA aeronautics, p51 and hopefully the av8.

    Good times

  10. Cib says:

    I can fly SAR birds for all you fast air types :stuck_out_tongue:

  11. Hey, it could be a good way to showcase… uhm… those… how are they called… Personalized skins? :stuck_out_tongue:
    Pluggity Plug!

  12. I was thinking this…

  13. Someone needs to provide a link to all of them. The way skins in multiplayer currently work is you can select whichever skin you like that is available to that country. Everyone with that skin installed will see it, everyone else will just see the default skin.

  14. I tell myself that every friggin’ day.

  15. I got that covered…
    I did one thread with the requests, one with the outcome and one with all the links…

  16. I spent at least 20 hours trying to get that stupid Su33 carrier mission to work just so I (yes “I”…because it’s all about ME) could play with the wonderful new Su33 model with friends. And it never happened :frowning: So, yeah, I am in if I get any of those days off and will try to schedule a slot to host it.

  17. This could be useful to someone.

  18. Aginor says:

    I’ll try and be there. If I can get my PC fixed until then that is.
    The Fly-Ins were quite fun the last few times. :slight_smile:

  19. Also just a heads up. I plan to have my Server up as in past years, but I think I’m going to leave 1.5 in the capable hands of @WreckingCrew and focus my energies on Nevada and perhaps Normandy.

  20. Dangit, there goes even more money now.

  21. Hey WC, do you know offhand what equipment is used in those missions? I’m about as rusty as can be, and badly need some remedial flight training. Thanks.

    Mission List
    The Hollo Pointe server will host these mission in DCS v1.5 (with latest version available). In every case, read the briefing. RTFB

    Erl Sis Urassis
    Blue: A-10A/C, F-15C, M-2000C, UH-1H, Ka-50;
    Red: Su-27, Su-25A/T
    Combined Arms
    F10 ALL, Labels Off, Winter, Start 0800 10JAN
    Red Democratic Republic captured oil sites and is selling crude to finance their advances. The RDR is threatening Krasnordar-Pashovsky Airbase.
    Blue Liberation Front must strike back against the oil facilities to stop the enemy finances. Stop the flow of oil and the RDR will collapse.
    NO MANPADS. Fast movers have wingmen.

    • This mission has turned into a classic. It features a great Blue A-10 experience in a low-level ground threat environment, clustered targets for cluster bombs, and enemy-tank priorities if Blue Combined Arms wants to travel south. Blue and Red fast movers add an air combat experience and threats to the A-10s; the enemy AI fast movers will keep on coming as long as their opponents stay in the theater.
    • Red Combined Arms can win this mission with the armor and artillery.

    Kill Fighters
    Blue: F-15C, A-10A/C
    Combined Arms
    F10 All, Labels Optional, Visual Recon On, Start 0600 21JUN
    Blue F-15Cs intercept Red bombers and fighters. A-10Cs destroy Red artillery south of Zugdidi River.

    • A-10 pilots don’t be fooled by the title. There is a lot of fun to be had in destroying the Red ground forces – just take care of that air defense missile threat first.
    • Originally designed as a Blue F-15C coop, your target is a 3-flight of Su-27’s. But your base is under attack by Red bombers with cruise missiles. It is a target rich environment, you have your orders, do you want to win the mission or be a cowboy?

    Kill Transports
    Blue: F-15C w/ Wingmen
    F10 All, Labels Optional, COOP Air, Summer Morning Start 0600 17JUN
    Two groups of four Red RDR Transports are heading southeast from Krymsk, along the coastal canyons, to Kutaisi.
    The first group flew from Krymsk at mission start time. The second group is expected to rotate within 30 minutes of the first. Both groups are heading to Kutaisi.
    Kill the transports before they can supply troops and equipment to Kutaisi Airbase.

    • All around fun F-15C action. You start from Maykop cold or warm or air start, and have a way to go south to the coast. Red transports are headed southeast along the coast and must be intercepted. If too many transports slip by then the mission is lost. You have lots of fuel, lots of missiles, and lots of threats.
    • I would love to run this one a couple of times with the F-15C experts here. This mission has gotten a bunch of love from me and @Dark_Star over the past few months. We know the F-15C systems but need instruction on how to fight. I find it difficult to pick up Red fast movers when they are down low.

    Blue: F-15C, M-2000C
    F10 All, Labels Optional, Start 0700 13AUG11, 3Hr Timeout
    Take off from Kutaisi Airbase. Fly up the coast to Novorossiysk and turn in to land at Krasnodar-Pashkovsky.
    Enemy fighters will launch when you reach certain navigation points. Civilian aircraft are not targets, do not fire on civilian/unidentified targets!
    Can you manage your flight’s fuel to Novorossiysk?

    • Pick your enemy aircraft. Blue COOP. Don’t let the end bite you in the ass.

    The Highway
    Blue: A-10A/C, F-15C, M-2000C, Hawk, L-39C/ZA, Su-25A/T, Ka-50, Mi-8MTV2, UH-1H
    Combined Arms
    F10 ALL, Start 0900 23JUN
    Recapture Novorossiysk base to win
    You are northeast of Krasnodar airbase
    Start at the northern tip of the lake
    Fly down The Highway – stay low!
    Escape and survival is the mission objective. The scenario follows a successful combat run above Krasnodar air base. All elements hit their assigned targets. Now, the A-10C’s are RTB when the entire region erupts with RDR air defense sites.
    Unfortunately, you have few weapons left and one path to the coast.
    The one escape route is ID’d south of Krasnodar and the waypoints are in the CDU. The lake exit point is marked with an illumination bomb.
    Follow the waypoints to safety to the coast. Stay low.
    The route is along the major highway in the region - a four lane highway - and all civilian traffic has been banned so any vehicles are fair game - weapons free.
    It won’t last long and it may not be pretty. Good luck. F-15Cs will trigger Red AI jets when Feet Wet. Don’t let us down, Eagle drivers!
    Timeout @12 Hours

    • The classic The Highway
    • STAY LOW. Sweet chariot. Red can win this with Combined Arms, so can Blue. But this is all about flying your jet down The Highway and ripping up the Red vehicles that never seem to stop. Repair at Gelendzhik, if you can land on that short runway. Blue helicopters can have a lot of fun in this, especially if the Hawgs take out the Red highway shooters. The objective is Feet Wet and attack Novorossiysk to defeat Red by taking the base. When Blue fast movers go Feet Wet then Red AI jets will launch.
  23. What aircraft would you like added to the above missions? I’ll see what I can do.

  24. This year I should SHOULD make it- having flown recently moslty the Huey, I’d love to be part of SAR operation with it, when otherwise no Huey roles are specified.

    If that makes any sense. Sorry, too little coffee available this morning.

  25. Cib says:

    I need a chopper too. Huey for preference but Mi-8 will do fine, Cib’s taxi’s will be available for hire :slight_smile:

    Too much coffee here, had to be up early to take my wife for a train free day and night for me YAAY

  26. I’ve been dabbling on and off with Combined Arms, and though I still don’t know what to do with it most of the time, I’d love a chance to learn more.

  27. I’m afraid I won’t be able to make it. I’ve got evening shifts that weekend.

  28. That looks like a great line-up of missions WC. If I would suggest another aircraft, perhaps the F-5E. No worries otherwise.

  29. sobek says:

    Hopefully i’ll be able to stop by.

  30. if i can ill be poppin my dcs multiplayer cherry for this :grin:

  31. Will try to make an appearance, if I can put down SuperBug work for a few hours, lol.

  32. Hmm, I wonder if we should set up a group (perhaps two, as both @near_blind and @WreckingCrew are kindly hosting). That was it will be easy for people to hit ‘Join’ themselves and then if any coordination is needed (i.e. what slots do people want to fly, or here’s a group announcement etc) then it’ll be nice to have a proper distribution list to use?

  33. sobek says:

    Will both servers run in parallel or do you plan to run them intermittently?

    Also what will you guys (players, not hosters :wink:)be focusing on? The reason i ask is that i want to gauge interest for the v2.1 server and if i should redownload v1.5 ahead of time as i currently don’t have it on my machine.

  34. Parallel. I dunno about Crew but it costs me nothing to leave it on.

    Generally the way it’s gone in the past is one server will be popular for a few hours, people will cycle off to grab food, appease spouses and or offspring, etc, cycle to the other server, repeat.

  35. The Hollo Pointe server is also on 24/7. I do need a couple folks who would like to be admins for it, to switch missions and restart if needed. Please PM me for access. You will need TeamViewer.

  36. Find an acetylene torch to…well…you know…

  37. sobek says:

    There’s more humane ways to get rid of your spouse, y’know? :slight_smile:

  38. (post withdrawn by author, will be automatically deleted in 24 hours unless flagged)

  39. Seems like the Fly-in is always about the same time as a major update, and this year appears to be no exception. (Thank you for that BTW, as this update should include the Harrier).

    Assuming the big update is OpenBeta, will you be running any OB servers with the Harrier in any missions. Harrier and Viggen might be fun in The Highway! :metal:
